Yeah, I think it's time we put a positive spin on this topic... ^^;;. I've decided... with the odds on the side of an expansion, I'll be getting the game anyway. If only to drive myself mad making terrains and plants. XD.
Has anyone here seen the videos about the planet construction? I'm completely overjoyed with it. Again, It helps bring back that limitless feeling to the game. Okay, so I can't make water monsters... yes, that will be an eternal pain if the option is never presented in spore's future. But I can make a planet out of Croissants!!
That's got to count for something. What do you feel you'll enjoy out of the game most..?

Stupid game ideas
Hmm, since this hasn't gotten a reply lately....
An anthropologist is on a team of excavators for a site on Malta- but the Mediterranean paradise is interrupted by a meteoroid impact! As our heroes emerge from the bomb shelter, they discover what the collision unearthed- an architectural structure nearly identical to that of Stonehenge.
With the new information of the highly preserved site, they conclude that the actual reason for the Stonehenge circles could be only one thing;
An arena for an ancient children's card game! The only problem; the rules are so complex and redundant, and the game art so horrible, that nobody on the earth wants to play it. This has angered the card game gods, who will seek vengeance upon the earth in two months if the archaeologist team is unable to convince every person on the planet that Generic Children's Card Game is the best trading card game of all time!
I imagine it as a crappy low-budget platformer where persuading people would involve beating them up with archaeological tools. Sorry that I didn't do better.

The general feedback I've been getting from various forums is that people either hate the stylized amoebas or prefer the old ones but will buy the game anyway. I have no idea what possessed them to do it, yamata is the first to say he appreciates it... not that he's wrong in doing so. Hey, I'm all for people being able to make bug-eyed cells with wiggling flagellum! It's not bug-eyed cells I'm against, it's the feel of the entire stage. I strongly prefer the organic, realistic sense of the original tide pool.
I've been paying close attention to this game since I read an article about it in early 2006- I'm not judging the first fourth of the game. I'm mourning the things I really appreciated back when I first saw the videos. I'm confident that the rest of the game will be just as amazing as it was before.
Either way, I'm less worried about the cell stage and more about the ocean/creature stage. I want a swimming creature, dammit, and I don't see why I can't have one!

I've decided that the latter stages of the game won't suffer from the change... but I'm still heartbroken over the possible absence of the ocean, and the overly cartoonish feel of the cell stage. It lost a level of charm and appeal that it previously had with me, and I don't think I'll be able to play the game without thinking; "Gosh, I wish I could do this, or be in an environment like that, but I can't."
That in itself is one thing that goes against the entire concept of the game. The ocean stage hits the hardest, I don't understand why they'd take away an option from gamers that they already had designed and ready in 2006. I can't help be worried about it, even if it was only something I heard.

Game Names?
Any mystical noun that ties into the plot is an instant winner! XD
For example, the "working" (pssh) title of one of my game ideas was "wreathe". The only thing I had was a story, I was trying to think of creative gameplay. So, I could either call it "wreathe" or "atlas", the two opposing forces in the plot. I decided to call it "wreathe", because it's the one you would hear about less.
And no, this is not a game I would make on any rpgmaker software. This, I'm saving this for when I wrestle my way to the top of the gaming industry. (Pssh again.)

When I first heard about Spore, I was ecstatic. It sounded like a beautiful mix of EVO, Majesty, and a gazillion other equally amazing games I will currently fail to mention. When the first videos were released in 2006, I was even happier. The potential I saw in the game was virtually unfathomable.
But a lot has changed since the game was announced so many years ago, and I'm more than a bit worried. Most of what I've heard is just rumors, but others are rather threatening and right before my face.
Compare these two images. The one on the top is from 2006, the one on the bottom is from 2008. What's the difference? The one on the bottom is a lot more stylized.
And yes, I do have a problem with that. The more you "stylize" the content of a game, the more you limit what things and experiences your player can have in that game. (Since everything has to adhere to the style.) Which goes entirely against what spore was supposed to be all about! The spore I saw in 2006 had more of an old-world feel- (which I admit I love) but the thing is, you could change that if you wanted. The whole thing felt more organic- and organic things are those must untouched by human creativity. It was a mystical, clean slate.
But now... I'm afraid I just don't feel the same way towards it. The new videos and advertisements make it look like they changed everything to look very kiddish. Not that I think this "style" should be unaccessible in the game; just that those of us who want big, scary, lurking ocean monsters shouldn't be forced into it.
What's more- and this was just a rumor- I heard they took out the ocean stage entirely! That means no swimming, straight from the cell to the shore! I'm devastated! The instant I heard about the game my first plan for a monster was underwater. I'm hoping it was nothing but chatter, but I've seen foreboding prophecies such as this come true before.
So, what are your thoughts on the game's progression? I'm currently wondering whether or not I'm going to buy it at all, at this point.... That may sound snide, but the entire way I wanted to play the game, and experience it, seems to have been removed.

George Orwell, (Though I had some aversions to 1984- I must be too american) For his brilliant job with Animal Farm. If I ever need another reason to distrust communism, I know where to look.
Laurence Yep- I read his Dragon of the Lost Sea series as a child, and even today the books strike me with a certain charm I have yet to find in any other literary universe.
I want to mention something else..., but I can't remember it at the moment. I'd say Ursula K. Legwin, but something about her books put me off. So I guess not at all.

I don't own any next-gen consoles, and I never played a game on a hand-held system that really stood out to me. And yes, I played Golden Sun.
I didn't like it.
was it a bad game? i just started playing and it didnt seem bad
The writing was good and for the most part, it was worth the time. But the lack of direction was ridiculous. Twice I ended up two dungeons ahead of where I should have been, not to mention the twenty-or-so minutes of gameplay it would take to get back to where I was supposed to be.
Play it if you want, but make sure you don't wander off to the earth temple before you're supposed to. You'll have to go through hell to get back.
Augh, and how could I forget PC games!? I feel horrible.
I'll have to list three here.
1- Princess Maker 2000. Don't look at me like that, it was awesome. It combined many different aspects of gameplay- it's one of the few games I've experienced that I can actually say felt completely... complete. I can't think of anything that could have been done to improve it.
2- The Longest Journey. The characters were so real and the universe so intriguing, I was left hungry for more. I'm going to get my hands on the sequel as soon as possible.
3- Majesty. It's old, it's small, it was ten dollars at best buy. Best ten dollars I've EVER spent in my life. Countless hours of fun building my kingdoms and beating the objectives- and when I was feeling a little quieter, I could simply open up a freestyle map and watch my empire grow. I'm sad that I can't find anybody who plays it, I'd love to try out the online multiplayer option.
